I am in northern California , and there is a huge gift scam theft at Raleys and Safeway.   You buy the cards and when the giftee. Goes to redeem them it's zero balance.  They go online to check card, and it says it's redeemed. 2 weeks ago our friend bought 300 bux worth of gift cards as prizes for Amazon and a few other places for prizes in a baby shower game.  Amy daughter won @a 50 bux one to Amazon, she went to use it and said redeemed.  They checked online and it was redeemed shortly ae cards were purchased. Hey called Amazon, Amazon said it isn't their problem but they know what happened. Someone goes into the store and gets the redemption numbers off the card. They go online and somehow when card is purchased immediately the card is used. It is now worthless. The person who bought cards talked to store manager.  They are pursuing this but will take a while.   The store gets their money plus fee for selling when card is purchased in store.  So now store, and the purchaser are out money.  They have tried to  follow the trail back where card was used, but accts are faked somehow so they can't find out right now exactly who has these accounts online to spend gift amt  geesh, my friend is out money til the police and  theft division settle all this. But they said it is happening all over.  So no gift cards for me now. I usually give so many at holiday season.

It's a shame how things are scammed anymore. 

If they don't hit you over your head for your handbag and watch, they's sit it a hovel somewhere in this world and rob you online.

It's a sin.
