Re: Getting Ready To Dump Cable TV

@Fribwl   I was also given the option by the Optimum cable company to upgrade to upgrade too to Cable Fiber Optics but so many people that have done so, are, like you, sorry they did.  They don't like the service, reception, etc.

We got a Firestick about 5 yrs ago so we could get Hulu Live and the ACC network as it wasn't carried by our cable.  When Comcast started carrying the ACC network and my husband passed away I cancelled Hulu live. I still use the Firestick but only when I watch Court TV.  I still have cable and a half dozen streaming services besides the Firestick.

I will only give up cable when it is no longer available.  Do not want to deal with "streaming" which I don't even know what it really is!!!  I want to be able to turn on my TV and go to whatever channel I want to watch without trying to figure out what to watch--too many choices.

@kaydee50  That's exactly how I felt.  I've had cable tv for decades.  Don't let the word "streaming" scare you.  It's really no different than turning the tv on as you normally do and pushing a remote button to get to whatever you want.  Even easier, when all you have to do is push a button or even easier use the voice control button to tell it what you want to see.

Re: Getting Ready To Dump Cable TV

@Mom2Dogs , I'm in the same boat as you.  I do have a Firestick.  I may need to be updated, but I wasn't able to watch or record the final episodes of the FBI series and it was the series finale for 2 of them.  I finally figured out how to get to them, but I still had to enter my username and password for our DirecTV to watch them.

Also, REELZ doesn't seem to be on any of the streaming services like Sling or YouTubeTV, so that's something else we would have to pay extra for as I'm not giving up On Patrol Live on Friday & Saturday nights.  The other thing is live tv for college football.

My smart TV is also not smart enough to run any of the streaming services without a Roku or Firestick.

DH has looked at dropping us down to a lower basic level of service with DirecTV and I'm okay with that, but it's up to him to do that.

I also have a concern about losing signal in bad weather.  Maybe it'll be better after we get our new internet modem.  Waiting on the WOW guy right now for that.  We live in Dixie Alley and I'd hate to lose a signal when the tornados come through.  We've been getting a lot of internet dropouts and slow-downs lately.

Re: Getting Ready To Dump Cable TV

We gave up cable a few years ago for YouTube tv on roku.  Love it.....BUT Xfinity/Comcast have continuously raised the cost of wifi.  What a bunch of bloodsuckers.  We now  pay almost $200 for JUST wifi.  We have to end this rip off somehow. I feel like such a "victim" every time I pay that bill.

we have an LG smart TV that supports most streaming services.

1.Fiberoptic internet/wifi = $73 per month

2.Sling Orange & Blue streaming=  $60

3.Sling extra sports package that I use from Aug-Feb then cancel= $15

4. An outdoor antenna

Cable tv bundled w internet was costing $206/mo when we ditched it a few yrs ago

Edited to add: i looked into many TV streaming services. YouTubeTV is the most like cable but is the most expensive at $87/mo. Fubo would give me all the sports programming I want but also around $86, $87.

Sling is the most affordable for basic packages, with add-ons available. For example I want Big Ten Network. I was able to configure a package that would give me that.

You don't give up Cable when you switch to You Tube TV or other platforms that offer cable but at much lowest prices. I'm dumping Comcast.

My Comcast is now up to 286 and we have cable TV, internet and landline and have Apple TV, Peacock and Netflix included. No HBO. Seems like I have a good deal.  Did you know if you sign up for automatic deduction of payment out of one of your bank accounts, Comcast gives a $10 discount each month ?

@ellaphant

i dont know how "much lower" it would be to be honest. once i add in everything i have with comcast/xfinity it might be very close. the basic youtube tv is around $100 if you have their basic plan. just adding in NFL network adds on $35 a month as a special rate. then all the other channels i have.....acorn, max, paramount+, starz, screenpix, local programming.....plus internet and landline phone which i would still have to keep.

i like my voice remote and it makes it so easy to search and dvr.
