@Ainhisg   I believe 'Messenger' is an app....which I do not have.

I am notified on my facebook page when someone messages me..generally it is when I have something listed on Marketplace or when I have messaged a business requesting a quote, information, etc.

Thanks

@Mom2Dogs as someone else pointed out, your friends can tell when you're on FB through the messenger app or on the messenger part of their FB page whether you have the messenger app or not.  It's all connected. There will be a green dot near a profile when that person is on FB on the messenger app and also on your feed if a person is online.

Truly, your best option is to create a different FB account associated with a new email address.  (I have three email addresses that I use for different things.)  If you do that, you can either keep your "real" FB profile, deactive it, or completely delete it.  I can give you instructions on how to do that if you choose that route and need help.

As an aside, unless you want to take new photos of the things you have listed on marketplace, I would keep your current account until those things sell.  If you try to reuse the same pics on the new account, it will be flagged.  FB WILL notice that because of fraudulent sellers. All things on the new account must be "new."

As far as FB jail, which there really IS such a thing, I have had two FB accounts for 14 years, have friends who have two FB accounts, and I've never known anyone to have issues.  I'm not saying it can't or hasn't happened, but it is unlikely.

@Ainhisg   Thank you...interesting about the 'green' light on Messenger, I have never seen that light on when I am on facebook.   Now that I think about it my 3 friends are greyed out when I am on facebook...I might have changed a setting that did NOT unfriend them but maybe so that they could not see anything.  When I get time I will see what I did...but regardless I never saw that green light as others have mentioned.

...What a pain, all I wanted to do is sell a few things.

Don't post what you don't want read.  Real simple.  It's like telling someone a secret and expecting them not to repeat it.

I've had two accounts since 2011. One has no friends and no one knows it's me. The other one has over 200 friends and these are people I know and their families. Different email address of course.

Everytime I go on I can see my friends who are there by seeing the "green dot". Don't like it because then they know that I'm there also.

My sister and I started flipping houses a few years ago so I use the unknown account for Marketplace. Get some great buys from Contractors selling fridgerators, stoves, microwaves dishwashers and so on.

I don't know for sure, but if you unfollow your friends would they still be able to see what you have posted? Maybe someone here can answer that question. If they can't, that might be the way to go.

@Qgirl26   Are you aware if people know when your facebook page is open?...meaning they know when you  are on facebook looking around..not posting just reading what is on your feed (if that is what it is called)

I'm so sorry, @Mom2Dogs . I just saw this but what everyone is saying about the green dot on Messenger is true. The funny thing is though that so many tell me they don't realize when they get a message. So if they aren't watching that, I don't know that many pay much attention to who is on or not.

@Sage04, they will still be able to see your posts. Unfollowing them is not the same thing as unfriending them. Unfollowing them only means that you won't get their posts in your feed. You have to go to their page to see what they post. But they can still see everything you post.

In general, since the Facebook options change from time to time it's a good idea to regularly "walk through" all of the various settings and preferences to be sure we've made the choices we prefer.

Regarding other eyes being able to see if we're online, there are 2 places we can disable this (I don't know if it disables it completely everywhere, but it does limit it).

1 -- In Messenger, under Preferences, we can turn "Active Status" OFF.

2 -- Also, in Contacts Chat settings, we can turn "Active Status" OFF.

Hope all of you are doing well!😊

@dooBdoo   I think I got everything set to 'me only' where ever I could.

Once I am able to sell what I have on marketplace I will close the account for a bit then after the dust settles sign up under a different name.

Thank you
