I was invited to a family members engagement party and my married daughter who was also invited went with me.  It was held mid afternoon and many of the female guests were dressed in semi formal attire.  The party was exquisite, arranged by a party planner and catered; I have been to weddings that were not this formal. There were about 150 people at the home of the brides parents.  They are well to do as is the grooms parents so obviously money is not an issue. I found it interesting watching many of the females present as they looked up and down at eachother appraising their clothes, bodies ?????  The life of the rich, not my cup of tea.  LOL

Obviously, I don't know any of these people, and wasn't there, but any time I go where women are well-dressed, I am always checking out their outfits.

Always looking for interesting ways women put themselves together.

I hope you had a good time.

It's been said that women dress to impress other women.  I believe it's true.

I send my regrets to an invitation like that.   "Putting on the dog" is not my thing...

Nope, I guess I'd like the life of the rich. The party described is definitely my vibe. I love getting dressed up. I love people watching and seeing how everyone dresses. I'm such a clothes horse. The OP raves how lovely the party was then ends by saying it's not her cup of tea. Hmmm.

It sounds like a nice party. As for other women being judgmental on the outfits of other party goers, it could just be your perception. Maybe others felt differently. It's all in one's point of view.

It sounds like the wedding will be very nice as well. Just try to enjoy and not overthink it.

Given that it was such a lavish affair for an Engagement party, wonder what the event will be like for the wedding?  I also wonder what type of gift one gives for an engagement, as opposed to what the gift expectation would be for the wedding?

Etiquette says that there is no requirement to give a gift for an engagement party. It shouldn't be expected since the bride will get a shower and wedding gift. Engagement parties are suppose to be a celebration of the event with gifts not needed.
