I wish I could say "barely" but yes, I had these skates - kept the key on a string and wore it around my neck.
Then I upgraded to white skates with wooden wheels and skated indoors at the roller rink. They had pom poms at the top of the laces and of course, stoppers.
Thanks for the memories.

I remember when the skate would come loose from the front two brackets and dangle around the ankle. Not good.
Some people would take the wheels off and attach them to the bottom of a 2x4 or other appropriate board. Voila, the first skateboard.

@ECBG : Not for me but remember my brother having fun.

@ECBG Oh, yes! We only had dirt roads, so we skated around the ping pong table in the cellar. Sometimes we went to the neighboring "development" to skate on the sidewalks. I kept my key in my pocket, because I didn't like anything hanging around my neck to tempt my murderous brothers. When we grew older, we took the wheels off the skates and put them on our homemade skateboards.

Never had them, as we had no sidewalks. My parents skated, and I bought skates and started skating every weekend after I graduated.

Brings back the best memories. Roller skating was one of my favorite pass times.
We were always active back then, if he bounced, rolled,or you could catch it, we did it. I remember having a PoGo stick, mini bikes, Go carts, playing basketball and softball in the field, catching crawl dads in the creek, building forts in the woods, playing volleyball and bad mitten in the yard, catching what we called lightening bugs in a jar, riding skate boards, throwing a frisbee and boomarangs and climbing the biggest tree in the neighborhood hood to carve our initials in the top.
.The tree is still alive in that neighborhood with all the initials of all kids that could climb it . Sad to think some are dead and gone, in many ways it seems like just yesterday.
Those skates bring back good memories @ECBG .
