Re: Bursitis - Cortisone shots question?

I've had cortisone shots in my knees multiple times for severe osteoarthritis. The first time, the post shot pain was worse than my initial pain, but the relief was over three years. The next time I had no post shot pain and about six months relief. The following one I had about 9 months relief. I'm on my fourth shot now, it's been about 7 months. My doc said that if the relief is shorter than three months, we move towards knee replacement. We're both hoping to hold off on that since I'm only 41.

Re: Bursitis - Cortisone shots question?

I had a shot of cortisone in my right outer hip for bursitis October 16 and so far the pain hasn't returned. There was only a slight discomfort having the shot because my orthopedists assistant sprayed something icy cold from a can until the needle went in.

Re: Bursitis - Cortisone shots question?

I've had the shots in my knees and the relief lasted quite a long time.  I thought they hurt when they were administered and one time I nearly fainted at the nurse's window...  I haven't had one in many years since but they do provide wonderful relief......

Same here . Big hurt getting the shots but so worth the pain not being there for over a year.

Re: Bursitis - Cortisone shots question?

Thanks everyone for your feedback. Just an update. It's been 4 days since I had the shots in my hip and back. The doctor prescribed me some pain med and some muscle relaxers, but I am happy to report I have not needed to take anything since the shots. Not even tylenol or ibuprofen. Sleeping great and laying on both sides since I'm a side sleeper with little to no pain. I'm hopeful the relief will last for a few months at least. So glad for the relief!

I have severe Trochanteric Bursitis in both hips that I can hardly sleep on my sides for more than 1 hour if that much. I get cortisone injections every 3 months, 1 in each hip and by bedtime, I can sleep a full night pain free on either hip with no pain. They are definitely worth the few seconds of discomfort of getting them for the relief they give! So glad you are feeling better!            Alleycat

Re: Bursitis - Cortisone shots question?

Alleycat,

So glad you are getting relief!  That's the same thing my doctor said I have. Did your doc happen to say what causes this?  Mine said it's usually the result of trauma, but I haven't had any trauma to my hips. I do work as an admin. assistant so I sit all day, but I have a stand-up workstation and try to stand for an hour a few times during the day. Just curious if he gave you any clue how this condition develops.

Thanks!

Re: Bursitis - Cortisone shots question?

I was being treated for frozen shoulder.  I got a cortisone shot in my shoulder and it lasted less than 6 months.  I got another the week of Thanksgiving.  Both times it took about 4 days to be totally pain free.

The first time the shot hurt a lot worse than the second time.  My orthopod gave me the shot both times and sprayed the area with something ice cold before he administered the shot.

Re: Bursitis - Cortisone shots question?

My dh was just diagnosed with bursitis. He was just given exercises to do. Just wondering if the OP was given a first alternative of exercises or just given shots?
