First get it appraised. Then two jewelry stores. See what each is offering. You aren't going to get anywhere near what he paid. Diamonds don't go up in value and the jeweler who buys it will want to resell it at a profit. The person who buys it, is buying a pre-owned ring because it's less expensive than brand new. The profit margin for the jewelry is tight. It's why my friend had the diamond from an old engagement ring reset in a pendant. She exchanged the platinum ring setting for the gold pendant setting and the chain.

I sold my wedding set years ago at a local jeweler ---the ring had a tiny diamond in it but had a good amount of gold-- so I got what the gold was worth---but going to a jeweler is the best place I think. I had dealt with this place a couple times before --sold a great deal of gold and silver --so was comfortable with them.

The ring is used, therefore, it usually brings 1/2 of the original value.

@Shanus wrote:@qvc chick I inherited my Mom's 3 carat marquise engagement ring. No one in the family wanted it including me...I had my own nice ring.
It was appraised for $30,000, but no jeweler would purchase it for more than $6,000. They can purchase diamonds wholesale themselves at a very low price and don't need to spend more buying one from customers. We finally let it go to a jeweler $7,000 who liked the color and shape. You know that old saying about a "bird in the hand....".
That's what I have heard about trying to sell your diamonds. You are just not going to get anywhere near what it is apparised for or what it may be worth.
Now gold on the other hand does bring in a good sum.

When I realized selling an engagement ring doesn't really pay off, I had a trusted jeweler work with me to exchange it for a pair of diamond stud earrings.
I had the earrings independently evaluated by the same jeweler who had evaluated the ring, and he said I got a very good deal.
Still have the diamond studs.
