Wow, you are a generous homeowner. Do you also fix them lunch and give them a goodie bag when they leave? I need you to hire me. LOL
I give mine caviar and champagne at the end of their work shift. I also give back rubs if they had an especially tough day.
@lgfan What, no lobster? 🦀 I want to work for you, too!
No lobster but maybe some cracked crab and Godiva chocolate if they did an especially good job.

We have a lot of workers here, some years more than others but we have always told them that there is a refrigerator stocked with cold water and soft drinks in the garage, and that there is a bathroom right off the garage door. We simply ask that they keep the door into the house closed because of the cats. Our patio is shaded and is for their use for lunch or breaks. The only thing we ever considered off limits was the pool, at the insistence of our insurance carrier.

The yard workers around here are kind of maxed out on seafood. We get tomahawk steaks for them and grill them to order. its BYOB for them but we just ask that they not pee in our pool.

@Ainhisg wrote:I've never had a worker ask to use the restroom...ever. I live extremely close to convenience stores and fast food places. They usually tell me they're leaving for a break, and that's that. Plus all our workers have always brought their own beverages/foods in coolers. Maybe this is a regional thing? I'm in SW Missouri.
@Ainhisg Maybe so. I agree. Never had outside workers ask to use the restroom except the one guy mentioned above. People working outside come with water and plans to take breaks around here. We offer people sodas or canned water if we come in contact when they leave.
Yard crews are people doing that work, people you don't know or can't really vett before hiring, other than they do good yard work maybe from a neighbor.
We have had relatives who do outside jobs, and of course they take water, lunch if needed and have plans for bathroom breaks. That's the accepted norm around here.

Anymore so many fast food restaurants and gas station bathrooms are locked for customers only.
I would do as someone else mentioned and stay by the door if I was uncomfortable.

I used to allow workers access to my hallway bathroom, not the master bathroom. Never had a problem. Then one day...
One outside siding worker asked to use the bathroom, but he was gone for a good while. I became curious. When I went to check, I found him wandering around in my home office.
I asked him what he was doing. He replied: "I couldn't find the bathroom." I said: "Does it look like it's in here?" He stammered and stuttered, like a kid caught in the cookie jar.
I told him he needed to get out immediately, making it clear that finding the bathroom, in the only hallway, couldn't possibly be missed.
So, now, I never allow outside workers to use my bathrooms. If someone is working inside the home, with a good reputation and reviews, appearing trustworthy, they are welcome to use facilities and grab a drink from the fridge.
With workers for siding, exterior painters, lawn care, etc., you simply do not know who you are dealing with. I learned that some contractors were frequently outside the city jail holding up signs for work for the early morning releases. They'll take anyone who will jump in the van, or truck and work for very little money.
My incident was a good while back. Sadly, things are even worse, today. It pays to be very cautious and set the rules before the project is started.

I will say that not all situations are equal. I had a couple of guys working in my driveway one day. They left the garage door open for easy access to the hose, electricity, etc.
If you enter my downstairs by way of the garage, there is a powder room as soon as you get into my house. I heard the one guy use the bathroom.
While I always allow workers to use my bathroom, I do appreciate being asked first and I have to admit I found it a bit gutsy of him to just come in and use the bathroom.
What was even worse than that was when I went outside to ask them if they wanted something to drink, the one guy said he had already helped himself of a bottle of gatorade! We had an unopened case of it sitting in the garage that hadn't made its way to the refrigerator yet.
Can you imagine he tore open the case and helped himself??

Citrine: i would not be happy with that worker! that's over the top and disrespectful.
we fortunately do not hire many workers since DH does just about everything around here.
we are having roofers in the Fall, so we shall see. DH will be here, so he can handle as he sees fit. they will prob be done in a day, maybe 2....
i do agree that workers do have scheduled breaks and more than likely use the restroom there (convenience stores). coffe break & lunch.
i more than likelly would let them use our downstairs powder room, especially if they are here for 8 hours, 1-2 days. not the one on the upper floor.
if it is multiple days and multiple workers, then we would have a port a potty delivered....
we had tree service due to storm and no one was here, so obviously they went elsewhere....

I had a dishwasher installed and the guy said the running water testing it made him need to go to the BR. Huh? The man is wierd ,anti social, never look you in the eye when talking Here at most an hour. I guess he is a good technician so they keep him. I told the Appliance store he was odd and hard to talk to and they know it. I said which was true my BR was a mess, a NO. Since I am alone I put off picking up after myself. He finished up in a few minutes anyway.
I guess I haven't had work more than four hours at a time. I think some take a lunch break as leave and come back. My big jobs they did that. Normally o.k. but workman I know that are acquaintances anyway.
