I am near your age (60) and in the same boat with even more issues. I am 5 ft, 220 lbs and still working so I have to wear business casual during the week and jeans on weekend. I've tried to lose weight with some success, but it comes right back so I don't see the weight changing much. I try to dress for comfort as well as looking nice, but lets face it, anything & everything I wear just emphasises that I'm short & fat with a big belly. I haven't a clue how I should be dressing!

- Do you find it hard to know how your fashion style should evolve.I am 62 and I have to admit that I am not attracted to the classic styles that are marketed for my age group.I prefer the younger trends but I am not sure that I should be wearing them. What are your favourite stores, brands and styles if you are in my age range?I haven't bought much new clothing for awhile as I am suddenly style challenged.
@dex. The term "age appropriate" is a pet peeve of mine. Although I do (at 69) wear mostly tailored clothes & have since college (preference not age), I also venture into trends once in awhile.
For jeans and tees and sweaters that are more trendy, I go to Chico, The Limited and The Loft. Since I'm a size 2-4 and 5'1", I also shop in the teen/junior sections in dept. stores and discount stores.
Styles? I'm usually in my predictable tailored clothes and save the more trendy things for days when I'm running errands or meeting friends for lunch: skinny jeans, long sweater, leather bomber style jacket, flat ankle boots or ones I can tuck jeans into. The accessories is where I go more trendy w/ necklaces, arm full of bangles or a large cuff and maybe drop earrings instead of my usual studs.
I've found it's better for me to not purchase too many trendy clothing items & instead wear trendy accessories. The trends are out of style in 3 mos. and money was wasted. Same w/ trendy colors. This winter it seems to be burgundy/wine. I may purchase 1 piece..maybe a sweater, but not cashmere or anything expensive.

@LoveacI know what you mean about high heels! To me getting dressed up even if I am wearing dressy pants requires a nice pair of high heels! I stay with a 2" heel and they still work for me! Hope it continues!!![]()

I certainly don't choose clothes based on my age or rule anything out based on my age. I've never seen a size "57 year old" dress or top. I wear like I like, at this stage of my life I dress for myself. I do like to look fresh and modern. I think that old concept of dressing for a particular age belonged to my mother's generation.

I'm 53. I shop Banana Republic primarily, mostly because they carry tall sizes, and their quality control is very good, so I can buy what I need and have it sent to my home.
If you aren't attracted to the classics, perhaps they aren't your cup of tea, but they do modify their clothing according to the trends.
I also like Sundace clothing but their sizing can be all over the place.
Peruvian Connection has some lovely things and so does Soft Surroundings.
Good luck!

I am almost 62. Now not working I dress very casual. Not trendy. Jeans, loose comfortable tops... nothing structured out dressy. I am not a name brand purchaser....and I find I now hardly buy new clothes anymore. I have plentyof clothes to wear.

Thanks again everyone.I will worry less about my age and more about how I feel in the new look.

I find myself laughing at some styles the younger ladies are wearing that are so " fresh". They are exactly what my grandmother wore when I was a kid. Those so fresh looks are grandma clothing in my mind.
I think the "looks fresh" comment is about the funniest thing I've heard from hosts and vendors! Also the most misused and overused phrase.
Google "fashon look fresh" images and you see every sort of style. Everything is fresh!
By the standards of these images, I'm looking VERY FRESH today in my jeans, t-shirt and sneakers!

Well it used to be that when you were called fresh, you were in trouble. I guess time changes phrases too.
