Re: Anyone Know Where To Take Classes To Do Your Own Taxes?

If you need free tax help and are low to moderate income and over 50, the AARP Tax-Aide program is available at senior centers, some libraries, and some walk-in set ups in malls. Use the online locator to find a Tax-Aide prep site near you.

The preparers are usually retired CPAs or people with prior extensive business experience. They take comprehensive tax prep classes in September and October in preparation for the upcoming tax season and have to take exams afterward to certifiy they are qualified. There are additional updating training sessions close to February when tax prep begins. They use their own tax prep software, Taxslayer, and each return is double checked by another Tax-Aide preparer before being securely sent to the IRS. You can also have your returns printed out so you can send them in yourself. You get paper copies for your records.

The Tax-Aide program doesn't do complicated taxes, just simple returns.

The library and mall lines can be long. Most senior centers take appointments.
