Amazing Della Robbia show in Boston!

[ Edited ]

While I haven't posted much about it I do love travel--especially trips to Italy and Switzerland!  This summer I had to postpone my vacation due to slow recovery from a knee replacement last December.

What I love about living in Boston, however, is in addition to being "close" (3.5 hours by train to NYC) we have really good cultural institutions like the Museum of Fine Arts.  And visiting there is always like a bit of a trip out of Boston!!  Especially with some amazing special shows they've had lately!

One of my favorite artists and styles is the religious art of the Italian master  sculptor Luca Della Robbia who is now prominently on display at the ultra fab Museum of Fine Arts Boston!  I saw this new show for the first time today and was blown away.  His work touches me so deeply and to think of how long it's been so nicely preserved is also amazing (over 600 years)!!

After lingering through the show for a large part of the day, I did some major damage in the gift store, picking up several catalogs and some beautiful bowls!!

I am curious if others here like Della Robbia.

Also, if you've never heard of him and are near Boston and up for treat check out the MFA Boston.  The show is on through early December and amazing!! Smiley Happy

Re: Amazing Della Robbia show in Boston!

I just did some quick research and was surprised to see how many Della Robbias were sculptors.  Apparently sculpting was the family business.  It's been a long time since art history for me.

I can appreciate Della Robbia's work but prefer more secular contemporary art work.

Yes, they wanted to keep the secrets of how they applied the glaze and they fired the sculptures!!

I love contemporary art as well!! That's what's nice about a big museum like our MFA Boston or some of the great museums in New York, London etc is you get to see some of everything.  Until several years ago I didn't think I really liked this period much myself!!

Thank you!!

My favorite class in college was Italian Renaissance Art. My guide in Italy was impressed that I knew what chiarascuro was!

Nice thread

I live in So CA and there is a Boys Reformatory of sort here.  Every year around this time they get orders to fill for Della Robbia wreaths.  Helps the boys to learn order, disicipline, cooperation, etc. Maybe some day, the exhibit will travel west.
