Aldi's is owned by the German Albrecht family - two brothers. Aldi north and Aldi South. One brother wanted to sell Cigarettes and the other did not so they split it.
I am of German decent and we used to visit Europe in the summers. I did not know it at the time but my Aunt told me to get fresh baked rolls out of the oven, some meats and butter for our breakfast. It was all delicious. My aunt had a lovely home and I walked up and down that hill, enjoying each day for my task.
Years later my Mom told me guess where you were? (it was about 9 kilometers out of Frankfurt, Germany my family town. I said no what was it? She said Aldis. I cracked up laughing but it was true!
One of the brothers who are called "albrecht" is indeed owned by Trader Joe's today. I'm not sure which brother branched out into Trader Joe's. Best to google it. Very interesting.
Ok, I have never been to one here in Florida and want to remember the good old days, but each store as far as cleanliness and management varies on the store. Hit or miss.
And interesting history between those two brothers. I wonder if they are franchised. Some are clean and some not. I have talked to many how great they are so that is my question about them. Reviews vary greatly so franchise is on my mind.
It depends on your store like a hamburger franchise.

Love Aldi! Always clean - very welcoming. Great products! The longer I've shopped at Aldi the more favorites I've found. Give some things a try and I bet you'll be hooked too! My husband and I are hooked. Great value and excellent quality.

I have 2 that are within 30 minutes from where I live. I've only stopped in a few times and usually had a certain item on my mind to pick up and it was usually something they didn't have, so, I can't say I have been very impressed. Nor have I really paid much attention to their prices. Didn't even know about the "surprise" isle several have mentioned.
However, after reading these comments, I may have to give them another chance as some of you seen to love ALDI!!😁

Wines are a good deal. Household items. Frozen foods.
Bring a quarter for the shoping cart. Bring bags or boxes to pack your stuff into your car.
Consider your act of kindness by offering your cart to someone in the parking lot who is going in ( as I've done to keep from having to walk back to the store to get my quarter back when my back is killing me lol )

No deli, no in store bakery. My store has a few items I like. Dairy and packaged cheese are good but random items can be out of stock for several weeks.
I don't care for their breads. Their own brand of cereals are off tasting. Their Clancy brand of chips and snacks are very salty. No reduced salt options available. Veggies at my store are limited and not the freshest.
I go there for baking essentials, canned goods, some fruit if they look fresh. Bottled gallons of water are cheap. Some frozen items are good like veggies, waffles, whipped topping. Bring a quarter for the shopping cart and your own shopping bags.

Sounds like with your experience - and as you say you may be expanding that - that Aldi's is a step below Trader Joe'?

I like their potato salad and the price can't be beat - something like $4.00 for two pounds. It may be a seasonal item, so if you don't see it, that's why.
BTW, you don't have to use a cart. I shop into my own basket or reusable bag.
People say their cheeses are very good, but I haven't tried any.
"German Week" is twice a year, at least. The most recent was last month. They don't promote it much, but during the week they stock a number of German food items. You have to be fast to get them before they're gone.
BTW, the store's name is "Aldi," not "Aldi's." It stands for Albrecht Discount.

@rockygems123 If you look upthread I explained the history.
There are two brothers the Albrecht family. One wanted cigarettes in the store and the other refused, hated having any cigarettes in the store.
So they split it between the two brothers. Aldi North and South.
I believe they are franchised out. One owns Trader Joes and the other brother does not. So right there you might have your differences. Some are clean, well stocked and some not.

@Skyegirl21 . I do not go there often but I do like it. Absolutely clean, clean, clean. Brand new store. Employees are also helpful and very pleasant. I went on opening day back in August. It was nice. I do want to go more often and I am waiting for them to sell the butterball turkeys. Hopefully the prices will be very good.
