My mom is looking to buy an adjustable bed. She has a very bad back due to spinal stenosis, arthritis, and bone spurs. She has been sleeping in a recliner for years now. Can anyone recommend a good bed? Sleep Number, Temperpedic??? Also, she is on a very fixed income so cost is a factor, Any suggestions for the most cost effective place and time to purchase one? Thank you in advance. Cross posted.

Hi! I rarely post, but your question caught my attention. I recently went mattress shopping for back issues. Although I did not get an adjustable bed, i did try out several brands. If you live near an Original Mattress Factory, they have models to try which are more affordable and they offer financing...several months, no interest, same as cash. All the best to your mom! And what a good daughter!

Have you priced adjustable beds? They're extremely expensive and not for the budget conscious. I have all the conditions you mention your mother has and ive gotten great relief from sleeping on a memory foam mattress. I would not, however, spend the money they're asking for Tempurpedic. I'd go for the Leesa or Casper mattress which are basically the same thing at a reasonable price. They all come with free shipping and have a generous return period. The internet is full of memory foam mattresses.

Back doctors DO NOT recommend adjustable beds or sleeping in a chair. This is NOT the optimum position for someone to sleep. They will tell you to buy a good quality mid firm mattress and sleep lying down as you are supposed to do.To get up you roll on your side , put legs over the side and push up with your arms until you are sitting on the side of the bed.
I can tell you for certain that when a person sleeps sitting up as they relax they slide down and it is exceedingly difficult for them to get back up so they sleep crunched in a heap. Definitely terrible for ones back. Any nurse who has had to lift patients up all day long after they slide down because they are sleeping with their bed elevated can confirm.

I got a Casper mattress online and the adjustable bed frame from a local furniture store. Love it. I can raise the head, feet or both. I can also sleep on my side which I couldn’t before. Prior to the Casper I would wake up with a constant backache, shoulder ache and just plain miserable. I think for a king size mattress and adjustable base it was around $1600.00. I priced Temperpedic and almost was convinced, but my gut could not justify close to $6000.00. Glad I listened to my gut.

@Meowingkitty, Dh and I are considering a new mattress and I wanted to try the Casper, glad to hear you like it! We do very little online shopping and he is even more old school than I am so buying a mattress online, well let's say I have not convinced him yet.
It sounds like you were happy with their policy to return if you did not like it....I guess you 'donate' the mattress they don't actually take it back. Were you happy with the ordering process? thanks

I have been doing research because I will be getting one in a few months. I have found SERTA has some great reviews on their adjustable beds. Temperpedic is very expensive. The Serta has a little better price point. Also if you have a denver mattress go there. They make their own brand they gets good reviews and is a little more cost effective.

Yes I was happy. They give you 100 nights to try it. If you don’t like it they will pick it up and donate it and refund your money.

What does her doctor recommend?

I sleep on a mattress with an adjustable bed frame. I bought the frame and mattress at Macy's, and they were reasonable. It adjusts for me to sit up to watch TV or read in bed and adjusts around the knee area. I was told that it's better to bend at the knees rather than sleeping flat, and just using a pillow under my knees didn't work. I like all of the adjustability options.
