I don't write Mr. & Mrs., but rather their two first names and their last name.

If I'm paying 5 bucks for a card...it definitely will be addressed formally

I agree with the posters who have said to address the card "Smith Family". That is the safe bet if you do not know the spouse's name.

Joan and Joe Jones (if she took his name, if not then: Joan Smith & Joe Jones).

I have not addressed any envelope to Mr and Mrs in many years. In my humble opinion, that is very outdated. John and Jane Smith. Or better yet, Jane and John Smith 😄

For greeting cards, I like to address the envelope 'Mr & Mrs John Doe'. Inside the card, I write 'Dear John & Mary'. When I'm sending a birthday card to 'Mary', I address the envelope 'Mary Doe'.

Mr and Mrs John Smith. That is how I still address cards now. I still call many of my friends parents and family members Mr of Mrs.

For a Christmas card I would put both names or Mr and Mrs. If it's just something for your friend then I would do her name only.

@CherryHugs A little formal for a good friend? I'd do the first names or the "Smith Family" as others have said.
