S4 Gallop - Heart Condition?

My husband's doctor recently told him when she listened to his heart he has an 'S4 gallop', which refers to a different sound the heart makes. This can supposedly be an indication of a heart problem. He had X-rays which were normal and now is scheduled for an echocardiogram. Anybody have any experience with this? First time I have ever heard the term.
