Totes vs Shoulderbags

I really wanted to buy the large G.I.L.I Roma tote bag tonight because I thought it was very stylish, but I stopped myself because I prefer shoulder bags. I just find it easier to shop with a shoulder bag or a cross body bag vs a tote. QVC sells so many of the totes that I am sure I am in the minority in this. I wondered if you "tote" girls had any advice on how to use them. Do you just get used to having a bag ib the crook of your arm? Or do you use them for travel and for dinner dates but not shopping? Just curious......
