You can always go to Home Depot and check out floor and kitchen tiles. You can put those little rubber or cork "feet" on the bottom so they don't mar your table. Some of them are beautiful! I've made coasters from the porous terra cotta tiles too.

I find them at TJ Maxx for next to nothing.
