According to the Consumer Reports ShopSmart magazine, an estimated 60 to 70% of our processed food has genetically modified ingredients!
The FDA does not require labeling on most products that contain genetically engineered plant materials, so there's no way for consumers to tell.
The genetically engineering issue has caused problems with imports and exports, because the US government stands virtually alone in its opposition to such labeling! Many importing countries require it and labeling is authorized by international guidelines.
Last fall, AquaBounty Technologies petitioned the FDA for approval to sell salmon that is genetically engineered to grow at twice the normal rate. If approved, it will be the 1st genetically engineered animal to enter the US food supply!
Why is the US virtually the only country to oppose such labeling?????
