How do you pronounce "grandmother" in Spanish?

Did you hear David tonight saying something that wasn't the way we normally pronounce "grandmother" in Spanish? My high school Spanish was way back then, but as I was taught it was pronounced "Ah-bway-la" or something close. . . He was saying something totally different I think.

Can someone clear this up for me? He was using the more familiar ending, but now I'm wondering if I'm wrong ! Yikes!
