I wouldn't put my jewelry of any kind in the clothes washer. They make jewelry cleaning machines for a reason. Washing machines are for clothes.

I am interested in reading the suggestions on how to fix a twisted necklace too.
I do know that for a "kink" in a herringbone or Bismarck link, you can lay it on a flat surface and roll a pencil over it to flatten out the kink. Kathy Levine would recommend this when she was selling these types of chains.
