I have a top load LG washer with an impeller. I really like it, my clothes get just as clean as the old agitator type.

With the impeller, you have to load it around it and not just toss the clothes in. My sister didn't get one because my BIL wouldn't be able to figure out how to work it! I suppose that may be the key, how you load it, like making sure you have evenly distributed the clothes so the load is balanced.

I agree get a washer with an agitator.  I have a whirpool with the impeller and sometime it does not let enough water in the machine, without water it wash, spins and tear my clothes.
