Unfortunately the digital version of Buffalo Spree is subscription only and I can't post it here (or I haven't figured out how!)
Here is the picture that started the article...I have to say it's exciting!

Absolutely gorgeous! Congrats! My hydrangeas are pretty sad this year. Think I waited too long to prune them. Yours are fabulous. One of my favorite flowers.

No, you did not, just remove the dead stems straight down from where they emerge. This will neaten them up. If they are in bloom now, you can also prune off the dead or shape the plant if its too large . Once the flowers fade, (especially if you do not know the name of your hydrangea variety), do not wait for weeks to do the pruning as you may remove the flower buds set for the upcoming year.
Here in the NE most hydrangeas took a beating due to the extended cold we had. The only hydrangea that seemed to love it was my smooth hydrangea arborescens 'Bella Anna'. I didn't prune a single dead branch off of it. I remember when I was in Chicago seeing in the summer the smooth hydrangeas in the landscape strips on either side of Michigan Avenue (they looked lovely!)
