Chameleon Plant (Houittuynia Cordata) Help

I know many people dislike this beautiful plant because it is invasive.  I just love it and for many years had two wonderful very large patches.  It seemed to thrive in the placed areas.  Last year both areas did not reappear, all was totally lost, just never came up.  I was totally heart broken and could not understand why.  I took care of it in the usual way I always had.  Can anyone PLEASE give me some advice on what could have gone wrong.  Thank You So Much In Advance.
