We just got one in the mail and it is much heavier than the one it is replacing so i was curious why.

Some of the new cards do carry a chip that lets you just pass it by a sensor. The internet folks who post often all say not to accept these cards as they are too easy to scan for your info. They have a symbol on them like the volume control on most computers.

These are the new cards that can be read by illicit scanners. I keep mine in a little metal case I got on Amazon.

QVC also sells the small cases that hold smart cards - cards with embedded chip and antenna. The wallets are lined with something that prevents a passerby from intercepting your signal and information. Sorry, I don't know the item number.

I've been told by people who should know that wrapping your card in aluminum foil will accomplish the same thing. The little card slips that QVC sells don't hold up very long. DH purchased some and they are already difficult to use as the tops are all folded in and out.
