My friend is using Google Chrome as her home page and searches with it. I use Safari to search with Google. What is the difference between them?

Google is just the search tool where you input something in a box and get results. You can use google no matter what web browser you are using.
Google Chrome is a web browser (similar to Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox or Safari). You can create a google (gmail) mail account, bookmark internet pages, create your personalized home page, and sync your google account with other devices you may have (via your email account) so that your home page will look the same on all devices (same bookmarks, etc.).
I have never used Safari, so I can't say how similar it is to Chrome, but it's probably pretty close.
I use Chrome because I find it to be faster than other browsers.
