Getting Netfix question

We just got a new Blu Ray DVD player and it gets Netflix but it says I need an Ethernet cable or something like that, says it doesn't recognize one being there?

Exactly what is this and where does it go? Is there something other that I need beside the subscription of course. thank you

Your Bluray player must be connected to the internet for Netflix to work. Some models are wireless and others require a Cat 5 cable. A Cat 5 cable is the same type of cable that connects your computer to a modem or router. If your internet connection is not in the same room as the Bluray player, you need to connect it wirelessly.

I'd provide more information but you didn't post the brand or model number of your player. I'm sure you can get the step by step instructions via the manufacturer's website.

Ethernet cables are readily available, but most stores charge a premium for them. Amazon sells very nice CAT-5 cables at very good prices. I've bought a couple of fifty foot long cables through Amazon at a fraction of what even the cheapest local retailer offered and they're great.

Because you can get long CAT-5 cables at a low price, you can have your router and Blu-ray player in different rooms as long as you can route the cable from one to the other. My cables go down from the router in my bedroom, into the basement, across the basement and up into the living room where my Internet radio and Blu-ray player are located.

If your home is a relatively modern home it may have come pre-wired with CAT-5 cables and outlets. A CAT-5 outlet would look like a somewhat larger phone jack. If your house is pre-wired then simply use shorter cables to connect your router to one outlet and the Blu-ray player to another and you should be good to go.

Some local building codes, in an effort to be forward thinking, required all homes to be wired with CAT-5 cables. Unfortunately they weren't forward thinking enough as those codes are now outdated since wireless systems are now so prevalent. In some communities you'll find yourself still forced to spend hundreds extra to build in a wired CAT-5 network even though wireless is now more or less standard.

TV, Blu Ray player and computer are all in the same room. I got a Sony blu ray player but off hand, don't know the model since DS put the box in the basement someplace. We have an LG 52'' TV and an HP computer and tower with windows 7.

No, home was built in 1965 according to our deed and we added the family room(large room) on to the back of the home, a ranch home. There is no way we can get under this room to connect a cable from the computer tower to the other side of the room to the TV/blu ray player. We could go above the ceiling, only those square blocks you can take down.

thank you both, will look into this. Would like to get Netflix since the Sony blu ray player gets it, comes up on the screen but said it doesn't recognize an Ethernet cable when I clicked onto it to get a subscription where it said.

As I posted, the Sony Bluray player must be connected to the router or modem. Do you have wireless in your home? Is the Bluray player wireless? Do you have a router?

You must have internet service or you wouldn't be able to post. You can get Netfix but you need to provide additional information for anyone to help you.

Yes I do have internet service but no it isn't wireless, not anything other than my mouse. I will have to get a router or a cable to connect them but think a wireless router would be much easier since there isn't anyway to get them wired together being there isn't a basement under this room and no way to get under it so, guess a wireless router would be the way to go.

Yes, it will be easier as long as your Bluray player is wireless. Belkin has a good wireless router, the security number is preset and listed on the bottom of the router. It's easy to set up. Since you haven't posted the model number for your Bluray player, this is as much advice as I can give you. Good luck.

I have been using a Netgear 4300 wireless router for about a year. The setup was easy,and it runs well. Netgear has other choices model 3400, or 3700.

will try and find the box in the basement wherever DS put it and will post the number of the blu ray player but no it isn't wireless, is plugged into the TV. Will post the number tomorrow, later today I should say since we just go to bed around 8 AM and will look when I get up since DS will or should be here by that time.

The Bluray player must plugged into the TV to watch DVDs or streaming content from the internet. The wireless is how the player accesses the internet so you can watch Netflix and other streaming video. If you don't have a wireless Bluray player, you'll need to plugged the Bluray player into the router using a cable. If that's not possible, return the Bluray player and get a wireless version.
