What is the difference between 4G speed and 4G LTE speed from cellular carriers??

I am trying to decide whether to stay with T mobile and get a new iphone through them or switch to another carrier, probably AT&T and go with a contract. AT&T has great coverage in my area with 4G LTE speed, and T mobile has 4G speed with LTE supposedly coming in the near future. What is the difference in speed? Sorry if this is a dumb question but I had to ask it since I can't seem to find the answer. When I talk to each of the carriers, I just get the salespitch.{#emotions_dlg.sneaky} I want the TRUTH!!! LOL....
