Re: Maryland closing school for 2 weeks.

It will be interesting to see if they bother to reopen for that one week as Spring Break then begins on 4/6. Majority of colleges are closed till 4/10 but University of MD, College Park (the main campus) and many Community Colleges are all telling students they will be returning to school on 3/23.

Re: Maryland closing school for 2 weeks.

I have a lot of confidence in Governor Hogan doing the right thing.

Local news was reporting that the first case of community transmission was reported in PG County and that drove the decision.  This is someone who had not traveled, and had no idea how he might have gotten it.  He is now seriously ill.

And, the fireman that assisted in getting him to the hospital are now out of service and hopefully, getting tested.

Prayers for all.  Very concerning.

All four confirmed cases in Delaware are individuals at the University of Delaware.  The campus started spring break earlyfor undergraduates as of yesterday and classes will be on line for the rest of the semester.  Graduate students still have class as of now.

I just read about the first confirmed case in Baltimore County on Wednesday.

All Senior Centers have closed until further notice.

Have no idea what University Maryland (41,000 plus students) is going to do after Spring Break.  Still up in the air what UMBC will do after 2 weeks. which has the same schedule as Maryland (College Park)  smaller student body, but just as vulnerable. Lots of international students are of marooned now.  A good size of that are Chinese and Indian students

Major actions taken today in MD. in response to coronavirus:

--National Guard activated

-- all events of more than 250 people canceled

-- cruise ship terminal at Port of Baltimore closed

-- no public access to State House

-- all nonessential state workers to work from home

-- public schools closed for at least the next two weeks. During the closures, schools and buses will be disinfected. The state will work to make school meals available during the closure

-- all license, permit, etc. expiration dates extended

-- no visits to state prisons

-- Gov. Larry Hogan turning over oversight of state government to Lt. Gov. Boyd Rutherford so he can focus on coronavirus response.

--12 Maryland cases so far. 2 people continue to be hospitalized, 3 people have fully recovered.

Well i am a MD state employee and am considered non essential. We have been told we have to go to work because we are not set up to work from home at our facility. So that non essential is clearly for agencies with work from home capability🤷🏻‍♀️

Wonder if the Gov is aware and I am sure we arent the only ones

I'm from Maryland, too.  I think it's good that our Governor Hogan is taking these steps.  Is it long enough?  Probably not.  Time will tell.  He is concerned (me, too) that since it's not just travelers coming home that we need to be worried about now but someone in our community has contracted it without traveling.  Where did he get it from?  Grocery store maybe or standing next to someone already infected with it?  I don't know.  And they say our doctor's offices are still safe to keep our regular appointments.  Rather my Kaiser HMO says so but I don't trust them anymore than anyone else.  How do you social distance (six feet) from those people?  I have a mammogram scheduled for tomorrow and I keep going back and forth in my mind re canceling it until a later time.  It worries me.  Because I'm in the high risk category already.

On Thursday, officials said there were three new cases bringing the total to four.

According to the University of Delaware, two graduate students and a postdoctoral researcher have all tested presumptive positive for the virus. All three individuals are under the age of 30 and are currently self-isolated at home.

The news of the three additional cases comes less than 24 hours after a professor at the university was the state's first presumptive positive case. Officials say the 50-year-old man is not severely ill and is now self-isolated at home.

False sense of security.  Does anyone believe all those students are going to sequester themselves at home for any length of time?

Gov of Maryland also said there should be no gatherings over 250 people including church services.  I wonder how many churches will honestly heed this rule.

For those who live in MD and are familiar with the LIVE! casino in Anne Arundel County, they are nightly PACKED with people gambling, eating at the many restaurants and staying at the hotel. Good friend of mine is a BlackJack Dealer and a friend of my son's is a drink girl/hostess there (who is THRILLED college is closed because she can work more hours). Great money in tips and though 2 performers have cancelled, all shows are still on (200 customers allowed). ALL employees are required to be tested for the virus and if positive, are immediately on leave for 3 weeks with full pay.

Do you know how many people work at this location for this company? And MD has 10,000 tests (supposedly) for the entire state...how is this going to happen? Apparently the owners are working with Hogan because the casino brings so much money to the state coffers.

I'm just...Woman Surprised
