I just learned that these have nothing to do with airlines.

A flight is a sampling of items. There are beer flights, wine flights, pasta flights, shrimp flights, salad flights, etc. Maybe Olive Garden was ahead of the trend with its Trio entree.

Is this popular everywhere? When did the word "flight" start being used this way?

Re: Food and Beverage "Flights"

I don't know when it started, but it sure isn't recent.  Pretty sure I've had flights of beer 30 years ago or more.

I remember hearing the word "flight" used in terms of menu items during the 1990's.

There's a restaurant here that had beer flights periodically.  I don't know how the word flight came to be used.  It just means sampling.  I had never heard the term, someone explained it to me.

There are flights of beer at many of our local pub/breweries. I like it---can taste test a few different ones from different breweries. I am a beer girl anyway.
