What color? Joan Rivers Great Hair Day?

OK. I am still not sure what color is correct for my hair. I bought the blonde and it looked like dirt and had a hard time blending it. I just received the light blonde, but am not sure if it is the right color. Are you suppose to match it too your scalp color? I have golden to light blonde hair with some strawberry blonde thrown in. I wonder if the red would be too dark?
