Question about tipping etiquette

I have just begun going to a new salon to get my hair cut, colored, and highlighted. The salon was a recommendation from a friend who has been going there for years. I have gone there once before and asked my friend about tipping before I went. My friend said if the owner does my hair that I don't tip her BECAUSE she is the owner. My friend also said that she has tried tipping her in the past and that she has refused, telling her specifically NOT to because she is the owner. However, the first time I went there, I was writing out a check and I said to the owner, "Can I add your tip right on here?" and she said yes... so I ended up tipping her because I didn't know what to do. I thought she would tell me what she told my friend, but obviously she didn't. I did tip the girl who washed my hair and prepped me. I have another appointment this coming week with the owner and don't know what to do this time. Any advice would be appreciated!
