Beauty and health of our teeth

I was diagnosed with periodontal disease last September and had 2 surgeries and deep scaling to reduce the pockets. I have since left my general dentist as he dropped the ball. I have a new dentist and a periodontist. I am not overly excited about the new dentist as I find myself comparing him to my previous dentist. After each of my teeth cleanings the previous dentist always checked my teeth before I left the office and the hygienist is pretty thorough, but I can't get past that they allowed my pockets to get so deep which required surgery. The new dentist I am currently going to never checks my teeth before I leave the office. I have been alternating my cleanings between the dentist and periodontist, but to be honest I don't see the difference in their method of cleaning, but they call it differently (perio maintenance and regular cleaning) and charge different prices? Why is that? For those of you in the dental profession, what am I missing or should be looking for?
