I was given hyoscyamine a couple of weeks ago for ibs. I have been afraid to try (it seems like everything I try makes me worse) Do you have to take this everyday, does it take a while to kick in, does it help for gas pain? I will ask the doctor - but for now I would rather get some opinions from people who have actually taken it.

Unless I am mistaken this has to be prescribed by a doctor. If so, what directions did she/he give you and what does it say on the prescription label and pamphlet that comes with most prescriptions?

I have been taking Nexium for many years now mainly because of my diagnosis with Barrett's Esophagus. Don't know anything about this particular med when it comes to the GI tract and what it is suppose to do for you.

When in doubt? Call your doctor and/or your pharmacist.

Re: Hyscyamine - need advice

I have taken this on and off for two years. I had cdiff and ever since then I do have a problem with my intestines. I saw my specialist and he gave me this prescription. If I have a problem I use it for a few days and then stop it. I don't take it every day. I find that it does help the rumbling and tumbling of the intestines. I've had some pretty bad pain and it does help. Never had pain like this before the cdiff. I had colon surgery for Crohn's disease in the 70s and never had pain after it. This pain was new to me. It works pretty fast too. If you take it when the pain starts it's better than waiting too long. I usually take 4 a day when I need it. I didn't have any side effects. Was told to put it under my tongue and let it melt. Guess it gets into the system faster.

Re: Hyscyamine - need advice

Levsin, that's one of the brand names for this medicine, works pretty fast. You can either put it under your tongue, or swallow it. You won't "feel" anything from it, like "high" or tired, dizzy, or anything else. All it does is relieve the intestinal cramping - faster than the older medicine, dicyclomine (Bentyl). I've used both meds off and on for years, as needed. Bentyl can cause a dry mouth sometimes, not always. Hope this helps.

Re: Hyscyamine - need advice

thanks so much - I have read the directions and have talked to the pharmacist. I just wanted to hear from others who have had good or bad luck with it. I was told I could take it as needed. I am always so hesitant about medications - so I try to ask as many questions as I can, and it is helpful to other opinions.
