Please help with this Malwarebytes question?

Started 1310779653.513 in Electronics Talk | Last reply 1311833179.79 by VolvoGirl

I downloaded malwarebytes on my computer about 2 weeks ago.....free version. I am now being told my trial version will be ending. If I recall correctly isn't there a free version that is not on a trial only basis? Can someone please help me out with this?

Bella,

There is a completely free version that has some of the paid version features disabled. It has been a while since I installed mine but if I remember correctly during the installation process you have an option to test (trial) the paid version. You probably answered yes without realizing the trial is a different version.

I found instructions to revert to the free version at the Malwarebytes website. The link is directly to the page with the instructions (2nd post).

After you download and install the Free version it will ask you if you want to start a free trial for the paid version. You probably said yes. You should say NO.

Looks like that's what the prior post also said. I didn't read it close.

After using the completely free version for years, I spent the one time fee of $25 and got the paid version. I'm so glad I did. It runs in the background and has stopped me from going to questionable sites while doing a Google search many times.

Malware writers are good. Gone are the days when opening an attachment was the only way to get infected.

Your malwarebytes is fine, you just lost the features that come with the paid version. Now if you want to run a scan you have to open the program and tell it you want to run a scan. Updating the signatures now must be done manually. Everything that was done automatically, now you have to remember to do it. I just installed the updated version a few weeks ago and I also accepted the free trial. In my case in two full weeks it didn't stop me from going anywhere and it didn't find anything suspicious, so I let the free trial expire and I'll use it manually once a week (after updating it) like I always did.

Hi all.....I'm just getting back to read the replies to my question. Like some of you said I may have said yes to the trial version as I probably wasn't reading it close enough. Thank you for your help.

That said....Gardenman - I'm a little unclear about your post. Are you saying that I should just ignore the warning that my trial version ends in 1 more day and that I don't have to do anything except run it manually once a week without going back to malwarebytes and downloading something else? I usually run it manually every 5 days anyway. Can you clarify or should I just go back to the site and download something else? Do I have to uninstall what the version that I downloaded or will it just override itself? Hope you see this.....

You downloaded the wrong version. If you want the free version, get it here:

I'm glad I saw this thread, a few weeks ago I installed the free version of Malwarebytes & it found a few things but I tried to manually update it recently and it wanted to install Malwarebytes again, is this normal?

I didn't go through with it because it seemed weird since I already had it installed on my pc. I downloaded it from a computer help site that's legitimate. I know I need to update it but I was wondering does it just keep installing another version of itself when updating?

It's not uncommon for a program to release a new version. When this happens, you install the newer version.

Bella HS. Malwarebytes reverts back to the free version once the free trial expires. You don't have to do anything. You just lose the automatic updating and scheduled scans. Mine is still there and still scans when I tell it to. I get a mildly annoying little pop-up from time to time telling me my free trial has expired, but the program still works when I need it. I just have to manually update it before each scan and then remember to scan once a week or so.

I down loaded anti-virus, anti-malware programs from CNET.

I am using AVG for anti-virus. I use SlimWare to clean my computer up and it's running better than ever.

FYI - I manually update and scan with malwarebytes free version once a week or more. And for a while now every couple of times that I open the program it doesn't just update it, it completely installs a new version. They sure are keeping busy putting out new versions. So don't be surprised with it.
