Questions about New Orleans please

I'm tagging along with my niece for her conference the first of Dec.  I've been to NO twice, but not since Katrina.  We will be at Hyatt on Loyola.  Just how safe would it be for 2 women to be out in the French Quarter at night----only til 10 or so.  If anyone knows the area well, anything walkable for me from Hyatt during the day?  I will certainly research the transportation, pick up points etc., but it is always very nice to have personal info.  Any tips, suggestions or info will be greatly appreciated! Oh, reasonably priced dining, brunch, lunch???  We will be together from Sat. afternoon and all day Sunday to explore.Thank you!

@pietook

Have been to New Orleans many times but it has been a long time.  Any city pretty much has the same rules to really be diligent and try to never go anywhere alone.

Hope you get some recent restaurant recommendations, the food can be fantastic in New Orleans.  As with skyrocketing prices everywhere there may not be a wide range of great food and low prices.

It would be a treat to go there maybe splurge a bit.

Cafe Du Monde I'm sure will be a must?!  Yum.

We went there in 2018 and felt very safe at night in the French Quarter. Such a neat place to visit.

@pietook There is nothing that interest me in the French Quarter after dark that I would put myself at that risk. Have an early dinner and relax at or near your hotel.

That's just what I was asking---just how safe or unsafe it is these days? Evidently, horribly dangerous?

Re: Questions about New Orleans please

I was just in NOLA in July celebrating my mom's 80th birthday. We were all hanging out well into the night and no one thought about not being safe.

The French Quarter is a well-policed tourist trap, so I wouldn't worry.

Re: Questions about New Orleans please

I realize this is an old thread, but I wanted to mention a few Christmas related activities that a friend and I enjoyed last year in early December.

The Celebration in the Oaks is a lovely light celebration.  You can walk and/or ride a small train to enjoy the lights.  We took an Uber from the French Market area and it was  very affordable.

St Louis Cathedral has some free concerts at 6:00 in the evening a couple of times a week.

We walked around at lunch and checked out some of the hotel decorations.  Some of the hotels have students from local schools singing carols at lunch time too.

And ... if you have time,  some of the Reveillon Dinners were excellent. I think we

went to Muriel's Jackson Square.

Re: Questions about New Orleans please

OK, I just got back Wednesday from my trip.  My thoughts--- I am glad to have seen New Orleans, French Quarter, Canal St. etc. in it's glory back in the day.  Now --- I was so saddened by the change.  I don't think it has recovered from the hurricanes troubles etc---lots of areas were so unkept----vacant---vacrancy---so sad.  The food was still wonderful!  Music great!  I walked about 5/6 miles a day alone, (my niece was in meetings) and honestly, a few areas were downright sketchy!  The Casino was very nice!  (I left them with $21 of my money--lol).  I have friends that New Orleans is "their place" to vacation---either love it or hate I guess????  I'm 71----not itching to go back!

You'll be fine. Just don't go wandering down some off streets where it's dark.
