Singer-songwriter Jimmy Buffett, who popularized beach bum soft rock with the escapist song “Margaritaville” and turned that into an empire of restaurants, resorts and frozen concoctions, has died. He was 76.

“Jimmy passed away peacefully on the night of September 1st surrounded by his family, friends, music and dogs,” a statement posted to Buffett's official website and social media pages said late Friday. “He lived his life like a song till the very last breath and will be missed beyond measure by so many.”

The statement did not say where Buffett died or give a cause of death. Illness had forced him to reschedule concerts in May, and Buffett acknowledged in social media posts that he had been hospitalized, but provided no specifics.

Re: Jimmy Buffett has died

So very sad.  I was not a big Jimmy Buffet fan but liked some of his music.

Right before the pandemic my brother and I deicded to go to Disney for a few days after visiting with mom.  Instead of staying in the park we decided on the brand new (at the time) Jimmy Buffet's Margaritaville resort in Orlando.  It was beautiful.

I'm sorry to hear of his passing.

Very, very sad news. 😢 He brought a lot of joy to so many Parrotheads.

A sad goodbye to an all time favorite!  His music always put me in a good mood.  Saw him a few times, once in Madison Square Garden NYC - The Mardi Gras concert, and then again in NJ's PNC Art Center.  Lots of Parrotheads and lots of fun!  He will be missed.

Wow, what a shocker to hear of his passing this morning...so sad to lose such a talent!

He was one of the very few musicians of fun music, tropical flair, and with a mixture of country.  Condolenses to his family and his many fans. Another good one gone.
