Crediting back money from a debit card purchase

Why can they debit your account immediately but then not be able to credit your account back for 3-5 business days when you return something? Is the merchant playing the float or is it the bank itself who is holding your refund?

It depends on the BANK. I work at Marshalls. We give cash back on a debit, because some banks hold it. Causes problems on a daily basis.

I have never had a problem getting it credited back to my account the same day. I've heard merchants tell me that but I've never experienced it.

jcp also gives back cash on a debit card for the same reasons. can take up to 10 days to get the credit back.

I get my credits back on my debit card within 1 to 2 days.

I always get a credit back on my debit card within a day, possibly 2 if it's the weekend.

It also generally takes a day for the money to come out of my account.

However, I always use my debit as a credit card. I don't use it as a debit by entering my PIN.
