Re: now flossing is not found to be of any use.....?

Like anything else, it depends on YOU and your teeth.  Some it helps, some it doesn't.  Probaby kids today have better spaced teeth because so many wore braces.  That probably makes brushing more effective.

@Sooner,

I don't think kids today even know what dental floss is. My neighbor runs a small day-care business in her home. Some of the kids come from poor families who use food stamps. One day a kid came over to me and smiled...his teeth looked dreadful! I asked him if he forgot to brush his teeth and he told me that his mom didn't have any toothpaste!!Woman Surprised WHAT??!! Food stamp programs do not pay for toiletries, so dental floss is way out of the ball park and that kid will never know what it is. SAD!

It is sad.  I grew up in a very poor area.  It is hard to break that cycle of poverty and we do not do enough in our education system to get those kids out of that.  People always talk about teacher pay and a lot of other educational issues, but to me this is number one.  HELP and DIRECT those children out of poverty.

Give them some hopes and dreams and tools to achieve them.  It breaks my heart.

Re: now flossing is not found to be of any use.....?

My gums are in much better condition from regular flossing.  Before I became a regular flosser, they would bleed easily.  I prefer the Oral B Super Floss to the typical kind. I also use the G.U.M. Soft Picks when flossing isn't convenient.  I really like them.  My hygienist also recommended using a water pick.  I ordered one, but haven't started with it yet.

When I taught middle and high school the kids always knew I kept toothbrushes and toothpaste, feminine products, and trial sizes of hotel stuff for anyone who needed it. I kept it on the counter in back of room so anyone who wanted it could simply take what they needed without having to ask.

My my own son, however, had stomach issues from birth. He vomitted every thing he ate every time he ate. I had him to specialists with no diagnosis. When he turned 26 months old it stopped all by itself! By then, tho, the damage had been done to his baby teeth. Just like a bulemic he had destroyed the enamel on all of his teeth! They were black! I was so embarrassed. I looked like a very negligent mom! Of course I made sure to tell every teacher until he'd lost them all, but I overheard many cruel comments! As for flossing, I thought it was important to gum health as well?

Never underestimate the power of kindness.

Re: now flossing is not found to be of any use.....?

[ Edited ]

I heard this topic reported on the news on the radio...haven't read the article.  But the newscaster made it sound like they hadn't done enough studies to prove that flossing was beneficial.

I took it to mean, they have no supporting studies so one could not scientifically conclude that flossing was beneficial.

Personally, flossing is very beneficial.  My teeth are very close together.  Years ago, before flossing was recommended much, I got a cavity between 2 visible front teeth.  I have never missed a flossing since!

Btw I always used to floss after brushing, but in the last year or 2 I read that it is better to floss first.  The idea was if the flossing removes particles on or between teeth, then the toothpaste (when brushing afterwards) will make contact with more of your teeth (not blocked by food and tarter).

Re: now flossing is not found to be of any use.....?

You definitely need to do SOMETHING to get between the teeth, but I have to agree in that I find flossing to be the LEAST effective of the choices available.

I use a Proxabrush after any time I eat.  I also use a Waterpik once a day.

I have found that I could floss my teeth (and, yes, I DO know how to do it), and then use the Proxabrush and there WILL always be more debris.  Since I've been using those (I have several of them around my house and use one with the wide bristles (christmas tree looking ones) for most of the teeth, and one with a narrow one for between a few that are really tight.

Re: now flossing is not found to be of any use.....?

All I know is..... I floss every night after brushing and those nights when I'm so tired I don't feel like flossing.....but I do it anyway....I can't imagine leaving all that "extra stuff" in my teeth and I'm always so glad I pushed myself to do it. I'm sure unflossed teeth can cause bad breath as well. (Who knows how long those food particles stay in between teeth.)  I'm going to keep flossing and I bet it won't be long before they change their minds again.

I hate to floss - I prefer to use a water pik.
