I just learned that my SIL's mother has kidney cancer. I haven't officially heard the stage, but since it is in the lungs and adrenal gland I'm guessing from my internet research that it is stage IV. She is a long time smoker (and a retired nurse) but didn't seek medical attention right away. Recently she was hospitalized and given two units of blood. She has lost weight too (starting in the spring). If you have had this or know anyone who has, I need some help with what to expect. It appears that chemo and radiation are not good treatments for kidney cancer, and the survival rate at 5 years is only 8 percent (at stage IV). She is 70 and for whatever reason did not choose the Medicare plan for prescription coverage, so she may not have any treatment options until October. She is very stubborn and might choose to do nothing to treat this (which is her choice), but I'd like to know what my SIL and nieces/nephews can expect. Thanks in advance.
