After spending the winter on my indoor recumbent bike, I have been thinking about getting a bike for the outdoors. Lately, I have been obsessing about the bikes called cruisers, many have coaster brakes (remember, you pedaled backwards to stop), one or 3 gears and the step in style. Many of these cruisers are designed so that your feet are on the ground while you are stopped and still seated, nice for a shortie like me (five foot even). I do not need anything fancy, I would just be riding to nearby restaurants, the drugstore, the grocery store, and around the neighborhood. If I got a cruiser, I would not be able to keep up with my husband on his hybrid bike, not that I would be trying to keep up with him on his daily hour solo rides. He would definitely get to the restaurants first.
Draw backs for the cruisers are their weight and speed. Since I still have a long way to go to get in great shape I don't know if this is the bike for me. I do know I would look silly perched on a skinny racing bike. My other alternative would be a women's hybrid similar to his, and it would cost almost twice the cost of the cruiser. It has been interesting reading about the differences in women's bikes. Their is one woman who's company is only makes women's bikes, http://www.terrybicycles.com/, and someday I think I would like one of those, alas no one in my town or nearby sells them. I would need to be more knowledgeable about bikes before buying one online.
Does anyone have a cruiser? Is it really tiring to ride? Would it help me on my path to fitness and weight loss? I would love some feedback.
