Re: Who is giving injections for shots?

At my local CVS, only the pharmacists give shots.

Re: Who is giving injections for shots?

A few hours ago my husband & I received our Moderna Boosters, the 50% of the full dose that is recommended for us (we received the 2 full-dose Moderna injections in Jan. & Feb.). A pharmacist administered them. We had made the appointment online 2 days ago, and were ready-- took our vaccine card that had the dates of our first two shots of Moderna.

RELAXING when the shot is administered always helps the sensation of discomfort.

Thankful we received the booster today.

@gardenman  You don't really know about various injections! I, too, have given myself FORTEO. It goes into fatty tissue.

However, COVID and flu shots both must be given into muscle. If you were giving shots, you'd be setting yourself up for massive lawsuits. Be very careful what you say without full knowledge.

Pharmacists must take the APhA Certification for immunization pharmacist. Program includes hours of home study and 8 hours of seminar.

It is now part of the curriculum in Pharmacy School. Some states pharm tech can also be certified. Also have to have CPR training and Hepatitis B vax and blood born pathogens training.

Got this info from my pharmacist who is certified.

Re: Who is giving injections for shots?

In my state pharmacists are giving injections in the pharmacies.  State law stipulates that only physicians. Registered nurses, physicians assistants and pharmacists who have the required training can give injections.

Re: Who is giving injections for shots?

The medical professionals are overwhelmed.  My son is an RN and can give injections, including Covid-19 vaccines.  My daughter is a Nurse Practitioner with a full time job. Yet, she volunteers 12-15 hours a week to give Covid-19 vaccines.  Our medical professionals are well-trained, well-educated, caring, compassionate people.

Please don't malign the people who are trying to get us through this extraordinary crisis in health care in our country.

Re: Who is giving injections for shots?

MY Walgreens had pharmacy students sent up from the University of Houston to help give the vaccines. I think it was all hands-on-deck when the first round of vaccines were made available. My second shot and booster were given by the pharmacist.

Sounds like anyone off the street can administer a shot.

Not true of the Covid vaccine. In my state to administer the vaccine you need to be a health professional, retired professional, medical student, or pharmacist. I have been a volunteer at a vaccine clinic since February and I assist vaccinators, do administrative work, and also post vaccine monitoring. It's been very rewarding volunteer work!

My son is an ICU Covid nurse. All you have said is true. We owe our medical professionals more than most will ever know.  I am with you all the way.
