@halfpint1 You should go get your hearing checked!  You might have the same thing wrong with your hearing that my late husband had (tinnitius).

Look at this:

Tinnitus (TIN-ih-tus) is the perception of noise or ringing in the ears. A common problem, tinnitus affects about 1 in 5 people. Tinnitus isn't a condition itself — it's a symptom of an underlying condition, such as age-related hearing loss, ear injury or a circulatory system disorder.

Although bothersome, tinnitus usually isn't a sign of something serious. Although it can worsen with age, for many people, tinnitus can improve with treatment. Treating an identified underlying cause sometimes helps. Other treatments reduce or mask the noise, making tinnitus less noticeable.

Is this the same problem you posted about back in Feb. and before? Have you seen a doctor as was suggested? Please take care of yourself.

OMG you get the clicking?? I actually went to the walk-in clinic about a month ago because the clicking in one ear was making me nutsy. The only way it would stop is if I pulled down on my earlobe. The doctor found nothing wrong in my ear and said if it continued to have my primary refer me to an ENT doctor. She might have thought I was nuts because at one point I told her it's really clicking right now and to put her ear close to mine and listen, which she did. I couldn't believe she couldn't hear it!  A couple of hours after I came home I decided to try taking a decongestant. An Alka Seltzer cold med was all I had in the house. Half an hour later the clicking was gone.

Yes, I hear clicking noises sometimes but they are not very loud. I think it has something to do with my eustachian tubes. They can be affected by several things, most are allergy or cold related. The noise happens when there is fluid inside the tubes so taking an antihistamine/decongestant will help. There have been several times that I get the clicking after I inadvertently get water in my ears. Days later the clicking starts. @shaggygirl

I have several different cds with ocean waves, thundertstorms etc. I listen to it every night. I think I'm asleep before the first song is over.

I get the clicking/tapping too!  It is very random and very loud.   When I finally googled it found out it is very, very common and it is usually a muscle spasm type thing similar to an eye twitch.  Mine stops if I put my finger in the other ear, no idea why that works!

Why are you so resistant to seeing a doctor about this?  You need to see an Ear, Nose & Throat specialist.  Make an appt. today.  If you need a referral, call your regular doctor today and make an appt. with him.  You've talked about this for months, and it sounds like you haven't done anything about it at all.

Halfpint,
We haven’t talked but I have seen a number of your posts about the noise is you are hearing. If I understand correctly, you only hear the noise when you are alone, especially at night. I saw your post that you had a recent doctors appointment. I’m sorry you can’t get in sooner to get a hearing test. You mentioned that your doctor suggested seeing a psychiatrist for some counseling to address your anxiety levels. I seen your anxiety and stress in your posts and I am so sorry you’re under so much stress. Adjusting to living alone is chalenging. I hope you reconsider getting a consultation with a psychiatrist. He may be able to hel I hope you reconsider getting a consultation with the psychiatrist. It’s nothing to be afraid or ashamed of. At the very least, he/she may be able to help you reduce your anxiety levels while you try to find the answers to the noises you are hearing. The brain is an amazing organ. It’s possible you have something like tinnitus. It’s also possible what you are hearing is related to your stress and anxiety. A number of posters have offered the same suggestions to help you. I’m concerned that after several months you are still suffering.

@halfpint1  I have the white noise but the volume changes and sometimes it's so low it's barely perceptible.  I have made it a point to figure this out and the days it is low I had gotten between 8 - 10 hrs of sleep the previous night; I assume restorative sleep.  I went out with some friends the next night and got in around 2am and my ears were buzzing really loud but had not been when I left.  I tried to get another 8 hrs of sleep but could not and so as I type this I continue to have the noise.  Hopefully, tonight I will get enough sleep (if that is really what is going on) it's definitely worth it to me to achieve it again.
