Melantonin my husband and I both take it. For me it lasts for 3 hours I saw there are some time release versions but we get ours free from our insurance plan.
red wine at least 2 glasses during the evening
milk a small glass of milk or almond milk works for me but it takes a while to kick in
Good luck
I bought Melantonin, but with all my other medicine, I've been afraid to use it. Bought 3 bottles of white wine, never drank in my life, and decided to have a little 1/2 cup before retireing.Sleep like a baby. These were my Xmas handouts to mailgirl,UPS, USPS. anyways they will get something else. Oh my, 2 glasses? I'd wet the bed.

My son has had problems sleeping for quite a while.
He tried taking 10mg or more of regular melatonin - that helped him fall asleep but not stay asleep. His therapist recommended time released melatonin instead - that did help him sleep a little better throughout the night. What he found was that melatonin in general does not give him good sleep, he wakes up with nighmares and in a cold sweat.
I asked his dr for recommendations on something natural but his only suggestions were - exercise, no caffeine before bed, benedryl or he could prescribe a sleep aid (we didn't want anything prescription). We are at a loss right now for how to help him sleep. Exercise would probably help a little. CBD oil was not recommended by his Dr because it would amplify other health concerns which he has.

One Equate PM and a small bowl of Blue Bell Great Divide ice cream. Then up at 4:00 a.m. to exercise for that one bowl of ice cream. Which leads to the need for a sleep aid to fight the sugar. Vicious cycle but parts of it are oh so fun. The Equate really does work well with or without dessert.

@LuvmyLab - you did not say if the issue is not being able to fall asleep or staying asleep (mine is both). My brain flips on when I go to bed and I was lying there for hours trying to fall asleep. Did not matter if I got up and did other things or all the "recommended" stuff. I make a point of not drinking anything with caffeine after noon. Don't take Vitamin D after noon. I do not like the way I feel in the morning after using melatonin. I am not big on sleep aids, antihistamines, etc for sleep.
My wellness doctor suggested several things. I tried them all with pretty good results but stayed with just one (the l-theanine). She said to inundate with magnesium - like take a hot bath with tons of epsom salt. I cannot sit still in a bath so not a good option for me. I took a DaVinci product called TriMag at bedtime for about a year and that did help. She suggested taking L-theanine (suntheanine product), which is the soothing ingredient in green tea. I have had great success with that for both stress in general during the day and taking before bed. She also recommended holy basil which is also good for calming. You may want to google or ask your doctor about these.
When I wake up in the middle of the night, I try the mind game stuff, like aphabetical lists such as car makes/model. fruits/vegetables, states, etc. It does focus my mind and usually I can go back to sleep.
I recently got some kid sized weighted blankets (just take up my half of the bed) in various weights to see what worked. One combo was too heavy and I felt like a human panini. But I found a good combo and other than getting hot every once in awhile they seem to be calming too.
Whatever you try, good luck!!

@ceekay Hi! Thanks for the info. I have trouble falling asleep (can take up to 2 hours to fall asleep) and also staying asleep. I have been taking Magnesium Chelate at night about an hour before bed. It is the type that relaxes and helps promote sleep. I have only been taking it for less than a week. It does make me tired but once I hit the bed I'm wide awake. I can't seem to turn off my brain at night. I will try the "list" thing that you do.

@LuvmyLab Any sleep relief yet? Or haven't had time to put ideas to use yet? Just thinking of you.

On the rare occasion when I get up during the night to answer a call of nature, when I get back in bed, I'll open my Kindle and within seconds I'm sound asleep.
Oh how I envy you, my sleep consists of 1) Play solitaire on my cell pone until I am drowsy and fall asleep. 2) Awake after 2 hours, repeat no 1. 3) Again awake after 2 hours. This goes on all night and the longest I have slept without waking up is 3 hours..

@red&curly Thank you for thinking of me. You are so sweet! I did find something that has been working ok for me. It's from Nested Naturals. I take 2 Glycinate Chelate Magnesium (supposed to relax you and promote sleep) and 2 of their Luna sleep supplements. Seems to be working ok so far but things have worked in the past but quit after a few weeks. Keeping my fingers crossed that it will continue to work for me. I've also been working on relaxation techniques and trying to shut my brain down.
