After twenty plus years the Zpak finally failed me in Jan. 2020 for a sinus infection. In 1996 I had 11 infections total in 12 months time so started doing allergy shots for several years. I was always on antibiotics prior to the twice weekly shots. That finally got me down to only about 2 sinus infections a year until last year. Started on Doxycycline and it is now my go to for sinus infections. I hate the stuff but after taking about 6 times in the past year and half I have adjusted to the side effects. Now I take three daily prescriptions just to ease my sinus/allergy woes. Two nasal sprays and an asthma med., Singular that as been shown to benefit allergy patients. I have been better this year than I was last year so far.

I eat homemade chicken soup. Rub on the Vicks, and us Flonase. Works like a charm for me.

A shot of penicillin in one arm and a shot of vitamin B-12 in the other arm. Old school medicine from an old school ENT.

@BriggsiePeawiggle wrote:Zpacks do NOTHING for me. One of the odd and rare side-effects is a hearing loss, which a friend of mine -- a well-known classical/jazz composer ended up getting. I refuse to use them, and really why should I when they don't work for me anyway. I get a sinus infection once or twice/year -- usually during season change. For me, it's Amoxycillin 500s -- 10 days of them. I also use Nasalcrom and saline spray a lot to keep them away at other times. Nasalcrom isn't easy to find, but it's steroid free and it works well for me. The Navage things and the neti pots just add to my problems.
Thank you! I think doctors don't give me Amoxycillin is because it is the pennicyllin (sp) family which I can't take I will also look for Nasalcrom.
After my trip tp Walgreens I should be in good shape.
I know these suggestions are helping other people!

I literally made him put me on Augmentin which worked. Z pack won't cut it. Next sinus infection I got I went to see an ENT. Treatment was Augmentin and flonase. Please do yourself a favor and go see an ENT specialist.
Great advice and I'm checking to see who is in my area, thanks!

For a raging sinus infection, of course antibiotics are what you need. But I keep sinus infections at bay by taking serrapeptase as a preventative. It's an herbal supplement here but is prescribed for sinus infections and certain inflammatory arthritic conditions in Europe.
If you are on lots of meds, ask your doctor first. And you can't take serrapeptase if you are on a blood thinner, because it does mildly have that effect. It's great for preventing my sinus infections, though. I wouldn't be without it.

@Jackhound Mom wrote:Please tell me what RX helped you the most. I had a 3 week headache and finally went to the local clinic and was given a Z-Pac which is one antibiotic I know I can take. Before that I used saline rince several times a day along with tripple antibiotic ointment.
Still suffering and having symptoms...
Thank you in advance for your answers!

I hope that you feel better soon!
I'm prone to getting sinus infections, and I've been given a prescription Z-pack too when I've had them.
Sometimes it can take more than one round of antibiotics to clear up the infection, especially if it's particularly stubborn.
There have been times where I have been needed to be x-rayed when I've been ill, to check my sinuses.
I'd also use the saline rinses and then I'd also steam my head while in the shower.
You can also let your bathroom fill up with steam from letting the shower run as hot as possible with the door closed, with you sitting or standing in the bathroom, if you don't feel like taking a shower.
It gets humid in there from letting the shower run and the moist air helps your sinses.
You can also try putting a warm wash cloth on your face, too. You want to leave it on until it cools off.
I would do these things to help ease the sinus congestion and pain.

Three things to have on hand for a severe sinus infection:
1. Neti Pot (used with previously boiled distilled water and salt 1/8 tsp)- once or twice a day.
2. Kyolic garlic pills - follow directions on label.
3. In case of complete closure of nostrils due to too much blowing of the nose-- Nasacort.
I like to try to stay holistic, but I will state that Nasacort once saved my life when my nostrils became so inflamed one evening that no air was able to enter them, and I thought I would die in my sleep if I closed my mouth by mistake. Try pinching your nose shut and imagine trying to sleep that way. I don't think it is possible to fall asleep if no air at all can enter your nose. Nasacort brought instant relief as it reversed the swelling immediately. I was very grateful to have it.
