qualitygal: You are so correct about the different way all are saying "fruit & veg's first"! Even the hardcore Paleo or hardcore Vegan...fruit & vegetables are foundation of any healthy, sustainable way of eating. It makes me so, so, so sad when I see people limit fruits....they are Nature's treat for us....sweet, juicy, beautiful, hydrating, chock full of vitamins/minerals...why deny that pleasure? "Extra sugar" doesn't turn to fat...extra calories do. Extra sweetness will afford you the energy to move more. Rare that an athlete will fuel their workouts w/ meat only. Fruits & vegetables are the foundation. They are King.

No...This is incorrect. I studied biochemistry and nutrition in college. Excess fructose is stored as fat. Here is a quote from "The Good, the Bad, and the Malabsorbed."

"And strangely, although it is a carbohydrate or sugar, fructose is processed by the liver as a fat so, rather than being stored in the liver as harmless glycogen, it gets stored as potentially harmful fat. Thus excess fructose consumption leads to excess fat being stored in the liver which can cause inflammation (with all its attendant ills) and liver disease.

So far from fructose helping diabetics keep their weight down, it might well add to their risk of obesity. Indeed, because excess fructose is stored by the body as excess fat, excess fructose consumption could cause problems right across the population in terms of obesity, heart disease, stroke etc."

I only eat one apple a day. That is all the fruit I eat. I use to eat a lot of fruit, and when I cut back, I lost weight easily. I eat lots of vegetables low on the glycemic list as well.

1200 Calories is too low and your body might be in survival mode, thinking it is starving so it tries to hold onto fat. I would eat lots and lots of vegetables, lean meat, whole grain. I enjoy a sweet so I have a Weight Watchers Ice Cream Bar.

I don't know how tall you are but you probably need at least 1500 to 1700 calories per day but make them valuable calories like vegetables and whole grains.

I am a short woman so gain weight easily. I eat very healthy (WW Lifetime member) and keep track of my calories each day and write everything down. The only days I have more calories is when I do my Water Aerobics which is 3 days a week for 55 min. I have managed to maintain my weight for 3 yrs with this regiment. Through the years I have been a yo yo dieter and I finally found a way to solve this problem. Like I say, it works for me.

Sorry. Oranges don't cause liver disease. That's just crazy talk. But yet...you STUDIED nutrition & you believe this...and have been consuming 1200 calories a day...AND asking nutritional advice on a shopping forum when you have an advanced study in...nutrition. Something's not adding up. You're asking for our advice, but when given, it's quickly thrown away if it's not what you believe in. #sorryItookthebait

I don't believe for a minute that WW doesn't work for some people. If you follow the program and attend meetings regularly there is no way you can not lose weight and/or keep it off.

I have not missed one meeting since Jan 9, 2013 and have dropped 73 lbs....still not at my goal but I WILL get there.

I suggest trying it again....if you are not happy with your group leader find another meeting until you find the "right fit".

I have weeks where I lose more than I thought I would, and I have weeks where I might gain a little (when I thought I should have lost). It's a daily journey.

I also believe a true weight gain/loss takes about 2 weeks to show on a scale.

Some form of exercise is important too.

Good luck with whatever works for you and don't give up hope.

Lotus you are AWESOME!

Hi Brinklii & Ladies- Just wanted to thank you for starting this discussion. I am struggling with weight loss-major weight loss. I've done WW a few times in my life quite successfully, primarily after the births of my children. However, fast forward a few years, metabolism changing with age, the addition of a medication, some anxiety and mild depression issues, and voila, I find myself very overweight. I am exhausted tonight and probably will have much more to say tomorrow. But thanks again for starting this thread. Maybe we can all find some support.
