Re: Want some advice on beginning exercise program --- who can offer suggestions?

Walking is always good.  It's great for firming the tummy and mid-section (my problem areas), and it gets the circulation going.  I see you mentioned mall walking.  I like that too.  I have no interest in going to gyms or swimming.  The last thing I want to do is put on a bathing suit!  lol!  My favorite way to workout is DVDs.  Since you haven't exercised in a while, I recommend the Absolute Beginners and Sue Grant's Older & Wiser DVDs.  They're gentle but very thorough.  Check them out at your library or at Collage Video.  At College Video, they're listed under the Seniors workouts.  Leslie Sansone is good, but even with some of her one mile walks, I have to slow it down.

Yes, these are my bad places, too!  I don't think I will ever put on a suit again -- yuck!!!  I think the evil forces are hearing me -- just as I am making all of these plans --- my back has had a flare as well as my ankle!  Dang it!  I am blaming it on the extreme cold weather but I don't know what it is.  So, I am having to wait awhile and see what happens.  So discouraging.  My mind is there but once again my body is challenging me?!  Thanks for your post!  I will look up the videos you mentioned.

Angelpuppy, I just had a brilliant idea...see your doctor-share your concerns which are important-and ask him for a referral.  It could be physical therapy focusing on problem areas such as back pain, knees, hips etc.(That does need to be written on the prescription because PT can only address what body part is in that prescription)

Or,it could be a Wellness Center-even my little town has them. Usually, they are geared towards seniors, but they address all kinds of issues from cardiac and pulmonary strengthening to overall improvement in strength and mobility.  The best part? They are staffed by physical therapists, RNs and MDs are usually available.  They have the equipment and knowledge to assess and treat-and heaven forbid, in an emergency, they know what they are doing.

A good place to start would be to call your insurance company. They may not want to pay for a lot these days, but they do seem willing to pay for prevention and wellness.

Thanks!  Yes, this is a good idea.  I am waiting a bit to see if my back and ankle let up a bit.

Angelpuppy, talk to your doctor: a Wellness Center is ideal for you.  Things can be done for your back to lessen the pain-including traction and ultrasound.  Having worked with a neurosurgeon, I can tell you they don't want you to sit or lie too long. You hurt, I know you do-but without movement, the connective tissue and musculature will just get frozen making a bad situation worse.

Feel better and Cyber hugs,
