Re: Walking Is considered exercise but only if you take this many steps per hour

@hckynut just wanted to say I love your inspiring posts. Now I'm back to the food prep for tomorrow.

Happy 4th to you and your wife.  Hope your pets aren't afraid of the fireworks.  Mine don't scare, they just get mad and bark bark bark.😕

Re: Walking Is considered exercise but only if you take this many steps per hour

I have been walking just over 4 miles 6 days per week since I bought a Fitbit. I did not know if I could walk 3000 steps in 30 mins or not. I just did it. I was trucking. My thighs were burning off/on. I can say if I was not in my AC house no way I could do that outside in our heat.

Now I need to go use my Pilates Chair & recumbent bike.

Re: Walking Is considered exercise but only if you take this many steps per hour

The best exercise is.....the one you will actually do. I have been walking for 25+ years. I haven't missed a day in the last 6+ years. I'm not trying to lose weight, just trying to be healthy. I have walked in snow, rain, before/after hurricanes, and in the awful heat and humidity. I can't imagine not walking every day. I typically go for an hour (3 miles) a day or more just to get myself moving. I hope this is something I will be able to do for the rest of my life. Do whatever you like and it won't feel like exercise. 🤗🚶🏻‍♀️👟

Re: Walking Is considered exercise but only if you take this many steps per hour

Well, then, I never in my almost 77 years have had any exercise!

However, I take that study with the same grain of salt that I took the warnings about butter and coffee -  I've cut down on both over the years but I still use both.  And the exercise?  I just met with the vascular surgeon who monitors me and we discussed what I've been doing for the two years I've been in his care during which time I've lost over 50 pounds and while I've never met the goals of the study here, I walk more time and distance now than I ever did at any time before.

The doctor encouraged me to continue just what I've been doing with my diet, exercise, and meds and return in a year. Not once has he ever mentioned speed.  I suppose if I had taken different care of myself years ago, my goals would be different now, but to say I'm not exercising when I walk???  Sorry, but I don't buy that line!

Hi @Lisa Y,

Talk about commitment! Glad to hear this works so good for you, so congrats to you.

I started running, for fitness for playing hockey, back in the later 1960's. It certainly benefited my endurance when it came to skating, along with making my 100+° job easier for me to handle well.

Never was a person that even wanted to commit to any exercise daily, but I have done so numerous times recovering from serious injuries and life/death health issues. Recovering was not used as "training" for me, as were my workouts to help my ice skating or running faster Road Runs.

Recovery required everyday commitment for me, mostly because it was so far from where I "had been" in my physical fitness levels. Training everyday was not good for me. I regressed as opposed to gaining, and also set myself up to be more prone to body structural injuries, I unfortunately learned most the hard way.

My exercises today "kinda training" is seldom even 5 days per week, and for this old man, it is working fantastic.

Best to you and stay well,

Just can't do the treadmill...love walking outside but it's just too hot. Thanks for this info....100 steps is a number easy for everyone to remember
