@NickNack Thanks for the info. Then why are salons allowed to continue this practice? I do come to the forums to learn. Knowledge is power.

@OKPrincess I don't understand that at all. Maybe they aren't regulated well enough. Many of them don't sterilize their instruments properly either. The beauty schools either don't know this or don't train their students well enouigh. I've read this about cuticles before. My father goes to a medically trained manicurist to get his toenails trimmed. I don't remember what her title is exactly, but she was trained as a medical type manicurist. She told me it was very dangerous to let someone cut your cuticles, too.

@OKPrincess Just wanted to add that I went to a manicurist one time that wanted everyone to bring their own tools. She would sell them to you if you needed them. She cleaned them in an autoclave. She said that was the only way to make sure they were sterilized.

I started going for pedicures 6 years ago; loved getting my toes done in bright colors.
Last year something just clicked in my head about the layers of polish on my toes being unhealthy for the nail, and I .lost all interest in polish. I still get my toenails safely cut and trimmed at the shop, but no more color on the toes.

I used to paint my toenails but then stopped for some reason which I don't remember. During the last several years I have not had a single case of that disgusting yellow fungus which most of my friends who color their nails have to deal with.

I have never had a manicure or a pedicure done by a pro. I do my own nails and love to wear nail polish especially on toes because it looks so feminine. My polish never lasts more than a week or so anyway. I'm 67 and do not have fungus on my finger or toe nails, my husband who has never worn nail polish has fungus on his big toenails.

love my manicures and pedicures. they make my hands and toes look great and feel great. i do go on breaks every once in a while, but have never had any problems with my nails or skin. i have been going to the same salong for about 6 years now and they do sterilize their instruments and clean out their bowls. not going to stop.

My nails (hands and toes) grow so fast ... I'm lucky the polish lasts even a week before I see new nail growth. I have to cut my nails once a week!

@Lindsays Grandma My first reaction is that your podiatrist is (at least to some extent) thinking of use of UV soak off gel. Proper maintenance includes complete removal every 2-3 weeks. Particularly on the toes, any lifting might remain unnoticed and provide a p
perfect place for fungal growth. Any fungal growth under the free edge would also remain hidden.
Exposure to fungus could certainly occur in a salon. But exposure could occur in many other locations. Many who have never had a manicure end up with a fungal infection. The important thing is to identify and treat it promptly.

Yes...I don't use the gel polishes on my toes. Dont need to. The traditional polishes last for two weeks. Have never had a problem, and apply polish in my toes every two weeks, year round, and I've been doing this for about forty years.
