A detached retina requires immediate care. A detached vitreous gel is less urgent, but still requires a visit to the opthalmologist who will probably refer to a retinal specialist. I have had floaters for years and have learned to ignore them. Then last Christmas I got the vitreous gel at the edge of my right eye which scared me. My opthalmologist took me as an emergency case because I thought I might be losing vision. He took tests and referred me to a retinal specialist. I now get checked yearly by the retinal specialist who told me if it changes to see him immediately. Too bad you can't skip the optometrist and go directly to the opthalmologist.

I've had floaters for many years. Although mine do not affect my ability to see clearly, they are bothersome at times. A little blurring occurs in moving spots of my vision but nothing very serious. As the years went on they seemed to be getting more numerous. I decided to start taking hyaluronic acid (100% pure powder form) and that has helped me a lot. The floaters are not so visible anymore, but not completely gone. I was skeptical about the HA but now I'm convinced it works for me.Smiley Happy

@geegerbee, that's how I feel...hate it that I have to go through their optometrist first, but through my medical insurance, I only have two ophthalmologist offices from which to choose, and I've not heard good things about the second choice.  The optometrist I'm seeing has 17 years of experience and that, coupled with the fact that this is not an "eyeglass place"--it's an office dedicated to the treatment of eye diseases/disorders--gives me a bit more confidence that "they" know what they're doing.

@SilleeMee, now you know you can't post a comment like that and not give me the name of what you're using and tell me where you get it.  lol  I am almost a month into using the bamboo extract for my hair.  I ordered the smallest package to see how I would like it, and when I first got it, I thought that it wouldn't last any time at all.  Ha!  I was noticing today that it doesn't look like I've put a dent in it.  lol  If I understand hair correctly, no internal products change the hair that is already on my head, right?  It's only new growth that would be effected by the bamboo extract.

I'm sure you've read my other posts in the beauty forum about my new experiment of trying castor oil on my lashes.  I've read that castor oil in the eye can help reduce floaters.  No idea if that is true or not.  But some castor oil is seeping into my eye at night (not enough to be blurry in the morning), so we will see what happens there.

I need to research what a floater is.  For years, once in a great while, I notice something that looks like a speck of pepper in my vision.  When I try to "look" at it, it moves.  I've seen them in both eyes, but it is only one or two spots at any given time, and it doesn't happen very often at all.  Are those floaters?

Re: Vitreous Detachment

@geegerbee @Elri  @Tribesters and anyone else who has helped me in this thread--have you heard of, or are you taking, any supplements that your doctor recommended or that you think have helped your eye health?  I know @SilleeMee just stated that she uses an HA powder that she thinks has reduced floaters, and I believe one other posted mentioned Andrew Lessman's eye formula.

A couple of years ago when I had a routine eye check for new glasses, I asked the optometrist about a supplement for good eye health, and she said that unless you have macular degeneration, that the best thing you can do/take is fish oil.  She said the eye "vitamins" like Ocuvite will only aid macular degeneration--that they do nothing to help or prevent other conditions.

I can't say for sure @Ainhisg that your 'spots' are floaters but it does sound like it to me. What I take for mine is the Bulksupplements brand of pure HA powder...one level 1/4-teaspoon sprinkled into my morning oatmeal. This powder is a white, fluffy and tasteless powder that is not easily dissolvable in water...it sort of floats and clumps. so that's why I sprinkle it on food. You can buy it on amazon. Item number is:

I used to take Andrew Lessman’s eye health. I think it helped as my vision improved. However, I quit taking them. I don’t know why. I just was a little lax about it. About 3 weeks ago I started taking them again daily. I do think I see some improvement so I plan on continuing them. I had an eye doctor tell me once I had the biggest floaters he’d ever seen. They’ve never really gone away but they don’t seem to bother me as much. Maybe I’m just getting used to them?

@Ainhisg

Probably everyone is different but my floaters look like tree branches rolling across my field of vision.

@SilleeMee

If you don't mind me asking, what kind of HA is it?  Is it pure?  I have vitreomacular traction that has me at 20/100 instead of 20/30 where I was.

The vitreous humor is comprised of HA and collagen so I am doing anything and everything to keep away from another eye surgeon.
