Vigorous Exercise and Cognition

The study, published Monday in the Journal of Epidemiology & Community Health, found doing just under 10 minutes of moderate to vigorous exertion each day improved study participants’ working memory but had its biggest impact on executive processes such as planning and organization.

Vigorous physical activity is designed to boost your heart rate and breathing.

The cognitive improvement was modest, but as additional time was spent doing the more energetic workout the benefits grew, Mitchell said.

“Given we don’t monitor participants’ cognition over many years, this may be simply that those individuals who move more tend to have higher cognition on average,” he said. “However, yes, it could also imply that even minimal changes to our daily lives can have downstream consequences for our cognition.”

So get moving!!!

I'm going out soon to do a 4-5 mile walk.

Can't wait until spring to go bike riding. I have a regular bike and an eBike. The eBike is so fun!

One of my exercise goals this year is to go up to a 40% incline on my treadmill. I just recently took it up to 20% from 4% and that's a workout!

My dh and I started a walking regime going on 3 years ago (5 miles every day in all kinds of weather).  Not only did we both lose tons of weight but we've drastically reduced some meds and have eliminated some drugs altogether. And we feel much younger beyond our years! Yay! I'm a huge advocate for daily exercise! Woman Happy

I did my 3 miles today on the treadmill with weights.  We do at least 4 or 5 workout mornings a week.  It benefits everything!!    On alternate days we do enjoy Tai Chi but we've been slacking a bit on that.

Folks I am right there with you!  I am working from home today so I did a 30 minute HITT bike ride on my Peleton.  What a workout but dang I got a big boost!  Later today I will do weight training.

I am a runner but I hate running in the cold so I have been biking a lot.  At 67, my joints are starting to feel the impact of a lifetime of pavement pounding but I will continue as long as I can.  Keeps me thin, strong, young and fresh (according to my daughter💕)

Rock on with it folks!

Now this is one I might be able to pull off.  This one hour a day or even a half hour a day is just beyond me.

@Sugipine ....That's impressive!  I feel good about getting my treadmill to 8%.  I better start reaching higher goals. Cat Very Happy

I do a few arm exercises with 5 lb. weights and some leg exercises on our total gym too.

After awhile, I'm hoping it all adds up and improves my overall muscle tone and strength.  According to that age chart posted recently, I'm an old lady. Cat LOL

Re: Vigorous Exercise and Cognition

@Sugipine .... You must have a better treadmill than I do.  Mine only goes to 12% incline.  I checked after you said you're already at 20%.

Amazing!! Cat Very Happy
